  • Versatile antifungal spectrum: Treats superficial infections such as vaginal candidiasis, oral/esophageal candidiasis, and dermatophytosis including tinea and kerion; also used for systemic fungal infections including cryptococcal meningitis. 

  • Flexible dosing regimens: From 50 mg daily for skin infections to single 150 mg doses for vaginal candidiasis, to higher doses (200–400 mg) for systemic or recurrent infections—enables tailored treatment duration and convenience. 

  • High oral bioavailability: Approximately 90% absorption with minimal food effects; suitable for oral or IV use when needed. 

ℹ️ Key Indications & Dosing

ℹ️ Precautions & Side Effects

  • Common side effects: Nausea, abdominal pain, diarrhea, headache, skin rash. Generally mild. 

  • Hepatotoxicity risk: Requires baseline and periodic liver function tests; stop therapy if significant elevations or liver injury suspected. 

  • QT prolongation caution: Use with caution in patients with pre-existing cardiac arrhythmias or on QT‑prolonging drugs. 

  • Drug interactions:

    • May increase levels of phenytoin, cyclosporine

    • Increases warfarin/PT

    • Reduces rifampin level

    • Interacts with anticoagulants, sulphonylureas, theophylline, tacrolimus, benzodiazepines (e.g. midazolam) and other medications via CYP pathways 

  • Contraindications: Known hypersensitivity to fluconazole or other azoles. 

  • Pregnancy & Lactation: Not recommended during pregnancy or breastfeeding unless benefits significantly outweigh risks. Category C. Fluconazole enters breastmilk.
